Post-UKGE

Post-UKGE energy

Hey everyone. My calendar reminder worked, I'm editing a second issue! I'm still feeling pretty enthused following the UKGE, meeting and catching up with so many lovely people. I've got plenty of new games to cover, to join the backlog of reviews. I'm getting there though, so let's have a look at what I've been playing and writing about this week.

Reviews round-up

It's been a pretty busy week or two in terms of reviews. In the last issue I mentioned a lot of previews I've worked on, for upcoming games. More recently I've been able to write about games already out there in the wild. If you'd like to know more about the printing joy of Gutenberg, running shops in feudal Japan, or pushing your luck in Las Vegas, check these out.

Gutenberg Review - Punchboardpunchboard.co.uk You know what grinds my gears? Not Gutenberg, that's for sure. Portal's latest board game is a joy, and has gears to play with. Check it out!

Iki Review - Punchboardpunchboard.co.uk Artisans and craftsmen try to make their name in feudal Japan, in Iki, a game of set collection, fish, and fires. Read the review now.

Las Vegas Royale Review - Punchboardpunchboard.co.uk Las Vegas Royale takes Rudiger Dorn's classic game, gives it a makeover, and throws in some cool extras. Vegas baby!

What's on the table?

I've been playing plenty of Can't Stop. The BGA favourite (if you haven't played it, make sure you do) is a hit at my house, with the big chunky physical version proving popular with my wife and son.

Mostly what's occupied my main table, however, is GMT's Salerno '43.

It's a much more traditional, hex-and-counter wargame than I'm used to. I've got it to review, so I'm making sure I know how to play it inside-out before attempting to write about it. Wargames are a bit of a Brave New World for me, but what I've played of it so far is really interesting, and a lot more fun then I ever expected to have.

I also gave the new edition of Waggle Dance an outing, after picking it up from Bright Eye Games at the UKGE. It's largely the same game as before, but I really like the new artwork. Reviews of this and its sibling title - Termite Towers - before too long.

Finally, I've been trying out the new version of Isle of Trains, using the preview copy that Dranda Games gave me at the Expo. I really like this one, I'm looking forward to getting stuck into it and writing up a full preview ahead of the Kickstarter campaign, next month.

Until next time

Thanks for reading these, folks. If people are genuinely interested in the games musings of a giant bearded yokel, I'll keep going.

Keep playing, and be kind to one another.

Adam
